Macaroni Kid Goes Flying With Santa Barbara Trapeze Co.

A Once in a Lifetime Experience Comes to Santa Barbara at Earl Warren Showgrounds

By Sponsored Review Content By Harold Rosenthal (age 50+) and Victoria Rosenthal (age 12) September 22, 2019

A few weeks ago we received this really awesome note about a NEW business that opened in Santa Barbara called Santa Barbara Trapeze Co. It was written by the director of the company and we loved how excited he is about his new business and could not wait to check it out:

We are a new business located on the grounds of Earl Warren Showgrounds. We are excited to connect and serve the families in Santa Barbara. We are a recreational flying trapeze and aerial fitness company. Our primary offering is recreational flying trapeze classes. We work with all levels (beginner to expert). Our customer's age range from 5-105 but we've definitely made exceptions if a little one fits in the belt and is eager to take a swing. We'll be offering kids class after school this fall but we're also a great activity for parents to participate with the kids. Flying Trapeze is an activity that has so many benefits and is great for children and people of all ages. Our clients tell us that learning to take a leap with us has been a transformative experience and in addition to the physical benefits it positively impacted their leadership skills, confidence, and ability to focus.

Last weekend I took my daughter, Victoria (age 12) and her bestie to the Earl Warren Showgrounds for a fun visit/class with Santa Barbara Trapeze Company (SBTC), and we had a blast.  It is very easy to find right in the front of the parking lot as you enter the Earl Warren Show grounds. Neither of the girls had ever been on a trapeze before and I had tried it once at a Club Med in Florida a few years ago.

The girls were so excited to go that we  arrived on the early side which was very cool and we actually got  to watch as the staff put up the nets. Once everything was up and we turned in our signed waivers they introduced themselves and gave us a rundown of what would be happening. Both girls started out a little nervous when they saw how high up the platform was but they were assured they would have harnesses and it would be very safe.

Two other people in the class were more experienced, so they went first. Then it was our turn for our first attempt. Both girls got very nervous as they climbed the ladder and more so as each reached the top. My daughter’s bestie started crying a little on her turn, as she was getting ready to go but once she got up there and tried it she loved it. Everybody was extremely supportive and reassuring giving the girls enough courage take their first turn. Once they actually took their first turn they loved it and were anxious to go again.

You are never too old to go trapezing, I am in my fifties and I had a blast. We started out slowly, just swinging on the trapeze a little to get the feel of it. As the class went along, we progressed to trying harder stunts and by the end of the day, my daughter, Victoria, successfully mastered the knee hang and her bestie performed a backflip dismount. I was close but never quite got my knees on the bar but did do a back flip.

The environment is very encouraging and after we took our turns we were applauded by the staff, the participants, and the family members who had come to watch. Our instructors took plenty of time explaining exactly how to accomplish each task and every improvement small or large was celebrated. We ended the day excited and wanting to return to build on what we had learned and accomplished.

Classes are a high energy, fast paced journey into the unknown. Pushing you to put all doubts and fears to the side and find inner strength and courage. By the end of the session you will have accomplished what you previously believed impossible. SBTC offers the following programs, classes and workshops:

  • After school programs Monday - Thursday
  • Open Level Trapeze Classes where kids and parents can fly together - 7 days a week
  • Adult intensive workshops - Tuesday PM, Thursday, Sat AM and Sunday PM.

The companies founders have been teaching for 15 years or more each. Each student gets multiple turns throughout the class session learning the timing of the swing, a first trick and maybe even learning a backflip dismount as a bonus. At the end of class anyone who is ready will “go for the catch” and attempt to fly across to one of our instructors and be caught on the trapeze. It’s really important to emphasize that there is no pass or fail at SBTC as everyone comes  from different levels of experience and a wide range of backgrounds.

All you have to do is sign up for you first class. Bring your best effort. Then let SBTC do the rest!

It’s your first class, below are the phases during your first flight…

  • Phase 1: The Low Down - We do a group stretch and teach you everything you need to know.
  • Phase 2: Take your lesson to the air and experience flight.
  • Phase 3: Practice defying everything you know about gravity.
  • Phase 4: Learn from mistakes and celebrate every victory large and small.
  • Phase 5: Perfect your new skill and get ready to catch.
  • Phase 6: In the latter half of the session you’ll make some attempts and give it your best shot. Make an attempt to be caught in mid air and swing from the hands of a catcher.
