Each year on the first Friday in June, this year on June 7, 2019, you can participate in National Donut Day with some donut recipes you can make with the kids or visit a local donut store listed and get a free donut.
Donut Day celebrates the donut and honors the Salvation Army Lassies, a group of women that served donuts to soldiers during WWI. The donuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers. American infantrymen were then commonly called “Doughboys" and now we call Doughnuts, Donuts.
According to Wikipedia, National Doughnut Day started in 1938 as a fundraiser for Chicago's The Salvation Army. Their goal was to help those in need during the Great Depression, and to honor The Salvation Army "Lassies" of World War I, who served doughnuts to soldiers.

These two competitive eating juggernauts will fend off all challengers as The Salvation Army celebrates National Donut Day and remembers America’s veterans. The Salvation Army’s long history of support to the men and women in uniform began in 1918 when more than 200 “Donut Lassies,” traveled to the fields of France and served the comforts of home (donuts and coffee) to soldiers during World War I.
Donut Day guests arriving at the USS Midway on June 7 between 9 am and 10 am on June 7th can enjoy the Donut Eating Contest for free on the flight-deck and spend the remainder of their time touring the amazing USS Midway Museum.
Donut Shops from San Diego to L.A. displaying the National Donut Day poster in their shops on June 7 will participate in raising funds for The Salvation Army’s many programs designed exclusively to help our veterans. These programs include nights of shelter, substance abuse rehabilitation, job placement and counseling.
