Road Trip: San Francisco

July 10, 2014

To kick off summer this year, we headed north to explore San Francisco. My kids were super excited to explore the city as much as we could and they were not disappointed.

After we arrived, we checked into the Argonaut Hotel, located in the Fisherman’s Wharf district.  The Argonaut Hotel is a beautiful boutique hotel and part of the Kimpton brand. The hotel is designed to have a nautical feel with deep blues, exposed brick walls and giant wooden beams, keeping inline with the overall feel of the Fisherman’s Wharf area. The Argonaut is located on the west end of Jefferson St., making it an ideal located with easy access to the trolley, Ghirardelli Square (ice cream! chocolate!), Pier 39 and of course, Fisherman’s Wharf.

The rooms are spacious and have such a unique design that we loved. Be advised that some of the rooms overlook a common area that includes the hotel restaurant’s patio and a bar across the way. The hotel assured me that there would not be noise at night but we switched rooms just to be sure.  They were very gracious and accommodating to our request and our room was great!

The Argonaut has everything you need during your stay – complimentary Wi-Fi, complimentary wine hour in the evenings, knowledgeable concierges, and it’s pet-friendly!

So what do you do with kids in San Fran? Well, there are some definite must-do activities – a trolley ride to Union Square, shopping in Chinatown, scoping out the view from Coit Tower, and enjoying the many cuisines throughout the city.

During our visit, we explored the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco’s must-see destinations. From the minute you walk in the doors, there are nonstop adventures. Start at the living rainforest that is home to 1,600 animals coexisting in a 4-story dome. Many of these animals are free to roam within the dome – butterflies, spiders (some really BIG ones!!), birds and more.

Next head downstairs to the Steinhart Aquarium which is filled with sharks, stingrays, penguins, beautiful fish of all sizes and more! We really enjoyed checking out the California Coast part of the exhibit and its hand-on touch pool. It was fun to see and learn about all that lives on our coast!

Other highlights for us included the earthquake exhibit here my kids had their first opportunity to feel what an earthquake feels like (they have never felt one before!). It was a great experience for them to see some of the photos and learn about the effects of earthquakes, especially large ones like the ones that have hit San Francisco.

Somehow we managed to keep ending up at “The Swamp,” home to Claude, the Academy’s albino alligator. My kids definitely enjoyed watching his every move!

As I said, be sure to add the California Academy of Sciences to you SF destinations. The kids will love it!
