September 15 – 22, 2018, is Creek Week on the Santa Barbara South Coast. Celebrating its 19th year, Creek Week is an annual celebration of our creeks, watersheds and the ocean. 

Creek Week is an annual celebration of our creeks, watersheds, and the ocean, with many local organizations hosting events to help build awareness and stewardship of the natural treasures of Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Carpinteria.

Join in guided nature walks, project tours, restoration events, beach and creek clean-ups, and much more!

  • VOLUNTEER: Help keep your community beautiful by coming out to one of our many clean-up and restoration events throughout Creek Week.
  • GO ON A NATURE WALK: Explore the beauty of our surroundings by attending guided nature walks in and around our creeks, beaches, and watersheds.
  • ENJOY A GUIDED TOUR: Learn what local governments, non-profits, and service organizations are doing to restore our watersheds and improve creek and ocean water quality.

ACTIVITIES

Wednesday, September 19

  • Tour of Goleta Sanitary District’s Water Resource Recovery Facility  @ Goleta Sanitary @ 10:00 am – 11:30 am Goleta Sanitary District Tour the Goleta Sanitary District’s upgraded Wastewater Treatment Plant, and learn how biological, physical, and chemical processes treat wastewater and produce reclaimed water, biosolids. Minimum of 6 persons for the tour to run, RSVP required to Everett King by 5:00pm on Thursday, September 13 at (805) 961-7565 or eking@cityofgoleta.org.
  • Arroyo Burro Restoration at Barger Canyon Tour  @ 5:30 pm Creeks Division, Parks and Recreation Office. Join the City of Santa Barbara Creeks Division for a tour of our Upper Arroyo Burro Restoration at Barger Canyon. In late 2013, the Creeks Division purchased a 14.19 acre parcel on Foothill Road. RSVP Required to Liz Smith at (805) 897-2606 or LSmith@SantaBarbaraCA.gov. Access and parking at the site is extremely limited, so we will be providing transportation from our office via City vans.
  • San Ysidro Debris Basin Tour  @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm San Ysidro Debris Basin /The San Ysidro Debris Basin is one of several sites in the Montecito and Carpinteria area that serve as flood protection facilities. RSVP required to Cathleen Garnand cgarnan@cosbpw.net. Access and parking is extremely limited. A carpool may have to be organized depending on the number of people / drivers that RSVP.  If there are less than 5 participants, the site visit will be cancelled.

  • Sycamore Creek Clean-Up with the Santa Barbara Zoo @ 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm /Join the Santa Barbara Zoo for a clean-up of Sycamore Creek! With predictions for rains this winter thanks to El Niño, it is important to remove as much trash from our creeks as possible.

  • SB Audubon Field Trip: SB Harbor and Andrée Clark Bird Refuge  @ 7:30 am – 10:00 am / Santa Barbara Harbor and Andrée Clark Bird Refuge We will meet at the base of the breakwater at the Santa Barbara Harbor.
  • Straws Film Screening and Creek Week Celebration  @ Watershed Resource Center @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm /Join the City of Santa Barbara Creeks Division, Explore Ecology, and County of Santa Barbara Project Clean Water for a screening of the film Straws. Bring a blanket and picnic dinner or purchase takeout from the Boathouse next door, then watch this short documentary in the park. Learn about local efforts to reduce single use plastics and prevent pollution from reaching our creeks and ocean.
