The original Pete’s Dragon is one of my favorite Disney movies of all time and Elliot is one of my favorite Disney characters.  So when Disney hosted a day of movie screenings where I could see the movie before it was released to the public, I was extremely excited.

The 2016 movie, “Pete’s Dragon” is the adventure of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliot, who just so happens to be a dragon. For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest.

His daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliot. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliot seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

We loved the movie, it was exciting and heartwarming.  It had good lessons about the importance of family and loyalty.  The beginning was sad and a little scary so I would recommend taking that into consideration for very little children as it might be too much for them.

Elliot was amazingly realistic watching him fly was breathtaking.  The entire cast did a great job.  The kids (Oakes Fegley and Oona Laurence) had a great bond that was very believable.  Bryce Dallas Howard was wonderful as Grace the Forest Ranger who takes Pete in.  It is always enjoyable to see Robert Redford who is still a great actor.

In summary, we loved the movie and would highly recommend it for you and your family.  It is important to understand that this is not a remake of the original, but a completely different story with the same name and two characters with the same name.  That is where the similarity with the original ends.  If you go in accepting that fact you will love the movie.
